    Shows and Courses

(To book, go to the Enquiry Form)

Discovery days, holiday courses and lectures are held regularly. Guided tours of the museum are available on request.

Adventure nights can be tailored for any age group, and can address any topic within our field of reference - basically zoology. We will organise a speaker, videoLeopard study or slide show, worksheets if required, and a tour of either the whole museum or the relevant section. It is easiest to arrange an adventure night for a Friday; the Saturday can then be used for taking children to the zoo, the cultural history museum or the police museum.

What to bring: sleeping bags or blankets, plate or bowl, spoon, mug, toothbrush, pyjamas and towel. An adventure night offers a unique, fun learning experience to people, particularly children, in groups of between ten and fifty. Children arrive at the Transvaal Museum at 17h30 and are shown where they will sleep (the Genesis I hall). After a quick wash supper is served, followed by a Science Magic Show demonstrating basic physics and chemistry principles encountered in everyday life. Cedric Smith and Eddie Jansen will turn this into an unforgettable experience.

The Science Magic Show is followed by a natural history video on a subject of your choice. The accompanying worksheet and exploration session make this an interesting learning experience. The highlight of the night, of course, is the midnight feast, after which the children are off to bed. The following morning breakfast is served. The children may then spend more time in the museum display halls, or pay a visit to another museum or the zoo.

The cost of an adventure night is R50,00 per person. It covers entrance fees, meals, the Science Magic Show and video. When making your booking, you can specify the subject you wish us to focus on. Adventure nights are presented in English, Afrikaans, Sotho, Tsonga, Venda and Zulu.
